Flinders University Hub

Flinders University
Adelaide, South Australia

The design has created a new ‘front door’ for the University, significantly improving visual and movement connections and activating the central core of the campus. The Hub and Plaza draws students into a contemporary education environment with a diversity of spaces designed for active learning and capitalises on the spectacular views of surrounding natural vistas across the campus lake and further to the Adelaide coastline and plains.

Through a carefully refined selection of materials and an understanding of the topography, the design seamlessly fits within the existing Bedford Park campus. Central to the transformation of the is the giant amphitheatre with over 500m of glowing terracing that sculpts a central place for learning, socialising, relaxation and large scale outdoor events for up to 2000 people.

Further enhancing the project is the establishment of a sustainable rooftop garden above the new administration building.

For the enjoyment of students, staff and visitors, comfort and access were key criteria in the design of this new place. Existing shade and amenity was carefully managed with the retention of mature Plane Trees that were an important element of the original campus plaza. The new movement system contributes significantly to improving accessibility within the campus and responds to initiatives highlighted in the campus open space master plan (also prepared by Oxigen and Woods Bagot) for more equitable access.
